Why should I get an ultrasound before an abortion?

Even if you’re planning to take the abortion pill, an ultrasound may be required by telehealth providers before prescribing the medication.

           1. It’s vital to know how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Abortion methods differ based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. The abortion pill is only FDA-approved for up to ten weeks gestation. An ultrasound can accurately measure the gestational age and help determine your eligibility for different options.

           2. In order to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.

Sometimes a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, typically in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Abortion pills will not treat this condition. An ultrasound confirms the location of your pregnancy to ensure your safety.

3. It’s important to confirm viability.

An ultrasound can detect whether your pregnancy is progressing normally and check for a fetal heartbeat. If there’s no heartbeat or development, you may be having a miscarriage and could avoid a procedure that isn’t medically necessary.

With abortion no longer legal in Louisiana, many people have questions about how these laws impact miscarriage care. Unfortunately, some of the information being shared—especially online—has caused confusion and worry.

One common misunderstanding is the idea that a miscarriage is the same thing as an abortion. While both terms may appear in medical records, they are not the same, and Louisiana’s abortion laws do not restrict access to miscarriage care.

           What Is a Miscarriage?

A miscarriage, also known medically as a “spontaneous abortion,” is the natural loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks gestation (ACOG, 2023). It is not caused by medical intervention and happens in about 10–20% of known pregnancies (Mayo Clinic, 2024).

           What Is an Abortion?

In medical terms, abortion refers to the deliberate termination of a pregnancy through medication or a surgical procedure. This is also called an induced abortion.

           The key difference is intent:

Miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) – The pregnancy ends naturally without medical intervention causing it.

Induced abortion – A medical procedure or medication is used to intentionally end a pregnancy.

Why the Terms Can Cause Confusion

In the medical field, the word “abortion” can appear on hospital records to describe both spontaneous and induced pregnancy loss. For example:

            Spontaneous abortion = miscarriage

Induced abortion = elective or medical abortion procedure

This terminology can be unsettling if you’ve experienced a miscarriage and see the word “abortion” in your paperwork—but rest assured, they are not the same thing legally or practically in Louisiana.

Louisiana’s abortion restrictions do not apply to miscarriage care. Hospitals, emergency rooms, and OB/GYN providers across the state are legally allowed—and medically obligated—to treat miscarriage.

Plan C is an informal term used to describe a medication abortion, also known as

. It’s called "Plan C" in reference to other common reproductive plans: Plan A (parenting), Plan B (emergency contraception), and Plan C (abortion pills). Many people use the term when considering ordering abortion pills online, through telehealth, or receiving them by mail.

, is taken 24-48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Though often described as simple, a medication abortion is a significant medical decision. It’s important to be fully informed about the process, possible side effects, risks, and what to expect afterward.

           Why a pre-abortion ultrasound matters

Before taking abortion pills, especially through a telehealth provider, it’s often recommended (and sometimes required) to get an ultrasound.

This step confirms several critical factors:

That you are actually pregnant and how far along you are

(to determine if you're eligible for the abortion pill)

            Whether the pregnancy is viable

(ruling out miscarriage by confirming a heartbeat)

Confirming the pregnancy is in the uterus

(ruling out an ectopic pregnancy which is a medical emergency)

Navigating reproductive health care can feel overwhelming, especially as laws and regulations vary widely from state to state. In Louisiana, a range of abortion-related policies are currently in effect. Whether you're looking for information for yourself or someone you care about, understanding the current legal landscape can help support empowered and informed decision-making.

Are you pregnant but unsure when you conceived? An ultrasound is the most accurate way to determine how far along your pregnancy is. Ultrasound exams provide images and measurements of your developing baby, which can help estimate how many weeks pregnant you are and your approximate conception date. If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering your options in Louisiana,

In general, there are a few ways to determine your conception date. No method is 100% accurate, but some are more reliable than others.

           Ovulation

The first way to find out your conception date is to determine when you were last ovulating. In general, women can only conceive when they are ovulating — that is, when their ovaries release a new egg into their fallopian tubes for fertilization. That means you can use your ovulation dates to try to determine when you became pregnant.

Ovulation usually occurs about two weeks after your menstrual period and lasts for two or three days. This means you can sometimes determine when you conceived based on your ovulation cycles — simply determine when your last menstrual period was and add approximately two weeks.

However, this method isn’t always accurate. Not all women have the same cycles of menstruation and ovulation, some women’s menstrual cycles are irregular, others have ovulation periods closer to or further from their menstrual period and some women simply aren’t sure when their last period was. In other words, calculating conception based only on your body cycles can be difficult.

           Intercourse

Another way to learn your conception date is to try to determine the last time you had sexual intercourse. Unfortunately, this method isn’t totally accurate either. Conception is a process that takes time and a man’s sperm can actually stay alive inside your body for up to a week after sex.

This can make it difficult to determine when you conceived, especially if you have had more than one partner during the time when you ovulated. Also, remember that you could become pregnant even if you or your partner used birth control, since no method of birth control is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy.

           Ultrasound

The best way to determine your conception date is with a pregnancy confirmation ultrasound. Early pregnancy ultrasounds can determine the age of your growing baby and when you likely conceived. The earlier in pregnancy that this ultrasound is performed, the more accurate the measurements will be, and the more likely you are able to determine the conception date.

. This method of determining your conception date can be more accurate than date-based calculation, especially for women with irregular periods or who don’t know their last menstrual period date.

If you’ve already taken a pregnancy test, you might be wondering whether the result was accurate. There are two types of inaccurate tests: false negatives and false positives.

False Negatives: These occur when the test says you’re not pregnant, but you actually are. The most common reason for a false negative is taking the test too early. Pregnancy tests are more accurate when you wait longer for pregnancy hormones to build up in your body. To get a definite result, it’s best to wait until after your missed period to take the test.

False Positives: These are extremely rare and occur when the test says you are pregnant, but you’re not. False positives usually happen due to specific medications or underlying health issues. In almost every case, a positive pregnancy test indicates that you are pregnant.
